Call for Papers - German-Polish conference
at the University of Potsdam for junior academics
in the field of Jewish Studies and Jewish Theology
from 26th till 28th October 2016

At many universities and in numerous disciplines a scientific debate is taking place within Judaism, its religion, history and culture. At the University of Potsdam Judaism is considered from several points of view; from a cultural studies point of view in Jewish studies and the study of Eastern European culture as well as from a theological point of view in Jewish theology. Furthermore the subject also features prominently in other disciplines, for example in German, Slavic and Romance studies, in philosophy or in the study of history.

The increased interest in the subject has resulted in numerous bachelor and master theses which deal with issues relating to Judaism. Up to now there have been few occasions to discuss the findings of junior academics and make them known to a wider audience. The first German-Polish conference at the University of Potsdam for junior academics aims to be one such occasion. It offers junior academics a platform for the presentation of their work, for discussion and for cross-border networking. Applications are invited from masters students from both countries who are studying Jewish studies or Jewish theology or who are studying another subject which touches on the field of Jewish history, culture or religion. Students should already be in the process of writing their masters thesis. Completed theses can also be presented.

The conference will take place from 26th till 28th October at the "Am Neuen Palais" campus at the University of Potsdam. Arrival by 6 p.m. on 26th October and departure at the latest on 30th October. Participation is free of charge. Board (breakfast and supper) and lodging will be provided, and travel expenses up to €80 per person will be reimbursed. We request that written applications - which should include a brief resumé of your work and your CV – be submitted in English by 30th April 2016. The conference will be held in English. No translation facilities will be provided during the conference.

The organisers of this conference are the School of Jewish Theology, the Institute of Slavic Studies, the Institute of Jewish Studies and the Study of Religions at the University of Potsdam in co-operation with the Instytut Judaistyki at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków and the Zakład Studiów Żydowskich at the University of Wroclaw.
